Where this comes from
I grew up in Malawi — a landlocked country in sub-Saharan Africa, bordered by Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique. No coastline. No major port. Everything that moves in or out of the country must travel overland through neighbouring nations, across borders that add days to delivery timelines, across roads that punish every vehicle that uses them.
The operational complexity that most businesses encounter as an edge case is the default state for every business in Malawi. Inventory shortfalls, multi-leg transport chains, customs delays, fuel uncertainty — these aren't exceptions you plan around. They're the baseline. Growing up in that environment taught me something that no business school teaches cleanly: the quality of your operations is the quality of your business.
I moved to Australia and spent over a decade inside logistics, removalist, and field service operations — watching businesses run on spreadsheets, WhatsApp threads, and institutional memory. The tools existed for enterprise. Nothing existed for the people actually doing the work at scale on moving day.
